Viva Las Vegas: Day 1

This weekend was AMAZING...the drive, the music, the anticipation, seeing our friends, walking for hours along the strip and the list goes on and on. I'm not even sure where to begin so I guess we'll start with Saturday morning.
I didn't sleep that well Friday night because I was so excited to get to Vegas, surprise Jason and see our friends. We packed up our bags, loaded the car and started on our journey to Sin City. We decided to go to Hoover Dam before we went into Las Vegas...I made up some story about not being able to check in until later so he would want to explore a little. Joe and Sarah weren't landing in Vegas until 4:00 and I definitely didn't want to beat them to the hotel. The drive was long but not as nearly bad as I thought. Jason studied on the drive there and I listened to music on my iPhone. I had to be quiet so he could much harder than I thought it would be.
We saw some interesting sites on the way to the Hoover Dam. Some places looked like we were on the moon--crazy rock with no form of life ANYWHERE After about 5 hours of driving up and over the mountains and through the Mojave, we finally made it to the Hoover Dam. The Dam was bigger than I camera was definitely overworked for the hour or so that we were there! The whole process and idea and idea of the dam, along the amount of electricity generated from the dam is unbelievable.
Lake Mead is the lake formed by the Hoover Dam. It was very pretty and a refreshing sight in the middle of the dry desert. We had to go down to the marina and put our feet in the water!
As we were getting ready to leave, I gave my things to Jason and I ran to the restroom. He was snapping pictures with my phone and sending them to my mom. Sounds sweet, right? Well, when he opened my text message icon on my phone, he saw the texts from Joe and Sarah. He busted us...he figured out that Joe and Sarah would be waiting for us in Vegas. He was completely shocked! Needless to say, our drive back to Vegas was a little faster than the drive to the Hoover Dam. It didn't take long, once we got to our hotel, to go explore the city we've heard so much about. I knew that we would want to see all the free shows along our walk down the strip so we headed out almost immediately. I'm not sure we took time to breath for the first few hours that we were with Joe and Sarah....we missed them so much!
Caesar's Palace, The Mirage, Bellagio, Paris, Plant Hollywood and Treasure Island were just a few of the places that we visited! The shows and the casinos were so flashy and eye catching...the shows definitely kept our attention! We heard that there was a neat light show downtown on Fremont street, so we jumped on the bus and headed downtown. Downtown was "old" Las Vegas--it had the older casinos and hotels. The light show was very groovy. Bulbs were hung on the ceiling of an outdoor building...the lights made scenes and flashed to different songs. It was very "Austin Powers-like"

Throughout the course of the night, we would occassionally walk into a casino and try our luck but with no success. We had such a fun night exploring Vegas with our friends--we didn't want the night to end but we knew the next day would be packed full of Vegas fun and a 5+ hour drive back to Bakersfield!!
