Interviews, Music Class and Queso!

This week hasn't been too eventful...we've really been trying to get better and make it through the days without too many tantrums and without forgetting the multiple medicine dosages for each kid and pup.
Outside of our daily routine, here are a few things that have been happening over the past couple of days.

Jason has two fellowship interviews next week...Cleveland Clinic and Duke. We're excited to see how these interviews go and to hear back from a few others that he applied to. We've been ironing clothes and packing his bags so he is prepared!  Praying for the bad weather to stay away so he can drive safely there and back!

Amelia starts music classes at our church next week. Classes are every Wednesday and full of fun, dancing and tons of music! I'm excited to go and see her interact, learn and build friendships with kids her age in our church.

Barrett had his 4 month check-up yesterday. Our little man is 60% for weight and height and he is "growing beautifully". He ended up getting three shots and one oral medicine. He wasn't a fan of the shots but calmed down once he got bundled up in his car seat with his bottle.

Muzzy had an anal glad abscess during our flu-filled week, which resulted in going to the doctor twice, antibiotics and daily warm baths. Tomorrow is his last day on his medicine..thank goodness. He was pretty miserable so I'm glad we were able to get it taken care of before it got to the point where he would need surgery.

Amelia is doing great in her big girl bed! She had a few nights, when she was sick, where she woke up and started crying and since she was sick, we went in to pick her up and console her. Now that she is feeling better, she hasn't cried out for us! She's always been a great sleeper but I'm absolutely shocked at how well she does in her bed.

Jason will find out about chief on Thursday at grand rounds. We're both ready to know, regardless of the outcome. The suspense is killing me..HA!

The birthday list for her party is complete. We are now just waiting for the big day. We'll get a menu set and get the favor bags together when it gets a little bit closer. We don't have much storage in our house so we can't plan too much ahead without things getting broken or eaten.

I'm excited for the Superbowl this weekend. Who doesn't love some yummy appetizers, funny commercials and Bruno Mars?!

The Flu Bug (Type A) Attacks

On Monday, last week, Amelia got sick. We took her to the doctor for high fevers, a nasty cough and a constant runny nose. The doctor said that she had an ear infection in her right ear...first one ever for our little girl. We started antibiotics and we thought that we had everything under control. Well...little did we know what the week would hold.
On Wednesday, I started getting really sick. I got Amelia's high fevers, her cough, runny nose, aches and chills. I was so miserable...I couldn't muster up the energy to do anything so I spent Wednesday night and most of the day on Thursday in bed. After talking things over with Jason, we decided that I needed to go to the doctor. The flu is no joke, especially with two little kids, and I wanted to be sure that if I had the flu that we were taking the necessary steps to ensure that the kids (or adults) wouldn't get it. Everyone had a flu shot, except for Barrett and me. Barrett can't get the flu shot until he's at least six months old and I didn't get the flu shot because I have been so busy this fall/winter that it totally slipped my mind.
Well after a positive flu test (type A) for myself, a lingering ear infection and possible flu for Amelia and the start of Tamiflu for Barrett, I don't think I'll let the flu shot slip my mind again. We spent most of last week/weekend in bed with fevers, aches, chills and massive amounts of sinus drainage. Right as we were all getting a little bit better, Jason and my mom started in with the symptoms.
We've been lathering on the hand sanitizer (Cho included) and going through Kleenex like it's our job but the flu bug keeps lingering around in our house.
We vacuumed the house, washed all the sheets and blankets, sanitized everything that can be sanitized and started the air purification system to try and get rid of as many germs as possible. This weekend we were in cleaning mode and I'm hoping that our efforts help!

Today everyone seemed to be a step closer to being better. Today I went back to work after being home for 10 days so I feel like we're moving in the right direction.
I hate to see my babies sick....I'm so ready to have the flu be a thing of the past!

Bring on summer and the sunshine!!

Promoted...Big Girl Syle

Amelia has been trying to climb out of her bed when she wakes up in the morning so we decided that it was time to transition her from her crib to a toddler bed. Her crib is a convertible crib so all we had to do was remove the front panel and add a bed rail on the front side until she gets used to having an open side.
She was so excited to hang out in her new bed...it was filled with tons of books and toys immediately.
Cho needed to hang out in her big girl bed too! Amelia loved playing in her room all by herself and even requested that we leave so she could play and read by herself.
We were hanging out in her room after bath time and before bed because we wanted her to feel comfortable with the new sleeping arrangements. To say we were nervous about her having freedom was a bit of an understatement.
We made sure to double check that all the outlets were covered, that the toy box was closed before bedtime, that her fan was stowed away and in a safe place and that her bed was filled with all of her favorite blankets. We went through the same bedtime routine (bath, snack, potty, books and bed) and we held our breath. She went to sleep without any issues and we didn't hear a peep from her all night long. We slept with the volume on the monitor on high...just in case she got scared.
When she woke up the first couple of mornings after being in her big girl bed, she was pretty nervous when she realized that she couldn't get out of her room. She carried her step stool over to the door and she was banging and yelling for us. Once she realized that we were next door and we came to her as soon as she called out, then she seemed to be okay.

The transition to a big girl bed went so much better than we ever could have imagined. I can't believe that we have a two year old that sleeps in a toddler bed...crazy!

Snapshots

My niece, Ana, had her Sadie Hawkins dance on Friday night and I loved getting all the pictures of her in her beautiful dress. How is it possible that the sweet little girl that I lived with through college is already 16!
She is such an amazing girl...inside and out!

Amelia wanted Bazzle in her stroller the other evening and Bazzle didn't seem to mind one bit. She made sure to buckle him up before she pushed him around the living room. These two are inseparable!

Birthday party preparations are occurring during our free time and this weekend we were able to get her bean bag toss done. Amelia painted the box after I cut out a front hole and painted the whole box grey. I had a lot of bright colors for her to use on her box but she preferred to mix them all together and make a brownish/grey color. It took a lot of self control to not jump in and urge her to color it differently.
The finished product turned out pretty cute and I know that the kids will love playing with it during her birthday party.

My chunky little monkey is already 4 months old. He's getting such a fun little personality and I absolutely love to see it grow with each passing week!

After church, we drove the car through the car wash. With all the snow and the salt on the roads, our cars are filthy. Amelia got out of her car seat during the wash...she thought she was so big!

We were coloring one day and the sun was too intense so she decided to wear her sunglasses. She looked so sweet coloring her papers while wearing her glasses.

Barrett started eating rice cereal for dinner this week. He did really well with the spoon and he continues to get better with each feed.

I was off of work for MLK day and we decided to get out of the house and go to Chocolate World. Amelia was so excited to see the dancing/singing cows on the chocolate tour.

Amelia has been so sick this week and she asked her daddy to hold her during nap time. I had to take a picture of my sweet hubby holding on to his little lady. She is a Daddy's girl through and through!

Barrett loves his jumper exersaucer! He's always smiling when he gets in his jumper and he feels like such a big boy.

Amelia went to the doctor yesterday for flu-like symptoms and we found out that she has an ear infection. She had to wear a hospital gown at the clinic because they needed to do a full body inspection. She got medicine and we're hopeful that it kicks in soon and she gets feeling better.

When we got home from her doctor's appointment, Amelia said she was tired and she went and laid down in her bed and fell asleep.

22 Months & 23 Months

22 Months
-You now say "Hold Me Please" when you want to be picked up
-You want to sit in the kitchen sink and play in the water while we give Barrett a bath on the counter
-You twist and play with your hair, especially when you are sleepy
-You talk about Santa (HO HO) all the time but you weren't too happy to get a picture with him
-You have a great memory. You'll often tell us stories of things that happened weeks ago and we totally had forgotten about. Your stories often included noises, actions and some words. We can often put all of that together and figure out what you are trying to tell us.
-You've started putting your shoes on and no matter how long it takes, you're determined to do it all by yourself
-You can also put on your pants by yourself. We have to remind you to put the tag in the back and to put one leg all the way in before starting the next leg, but you put them on!
-You puked for the first time on the morning of December 4th. I think you got choked during a crazy coughing fit and it just worked up a lot of your dinner.
-You had your first haircut, or partial hair cut on Tuesday, December 3rd. Mommy learned that she is NOT a beautician...I'm sorry!
-You can work an iPhone or an iPad like a pro. You have your own folders for your things but we'll often catch you looking through all of the pictures.
-You experienced your first snow of 2013 on December 8th. You loved to play in the snow and go sled riding.
-You've started getting in your two year molars and you have realized that you can yank on your teething necklace so you don't get to wear it anymore. Teething without the necklace is NO fun!
-You've named your baby--your sweet little blue eyed baby doll has been given the name Cho. Not really sure where you got this name from but you assure us that you are saying Cho and not something else.
-You went to your first Christmas party at Ava's house and you did really good. The night ended with you decorating your own sugar cookie.
-You've learned to shrug your shoulders when asked a question
-Your favorite song right now is Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer

23 Months
-Kiss on command...they are definitely the sweetest kisses
-You put your shirt on by yourself on December 31,2013
-You are obsessed with cows (you call them moo-cows) and barns.
-You can peel your own clementines (Cutie brand)
-You are boycotting straws...you want to drink out of bottles and cups without them.
-You can jump where both your feet come off the ground
-You sleep with your blanket or blankets every night. I think you're up to 4 in your bed
-You have started sleeping on a pillow at bed time even though you don't always stay on it, you like it in your bed.
-You have definitely taken on the role of "Mommy" with Barrett. Anytime he needs a diaper, a bottle, a bath, etc, you think that you need to be the one that helps him.
-You request who you want to get you out of bed. Most of the time it's Daddy but he's already at work so you stay in your bed until you call out for Mommy (or Nannie). Sometimes you will sit and read (and pout) in your bed for 15 minutes until you are okay with someone other than Daddy getting you up.
-You love to be chased down the hall and into your room. You are a pretty quick little runner!
-You request a "bite" almost every night before bed. You love your late night snacks.
-You went to your first music show at the Hershey Theatre (Elmo Makes Music)
-You had your first, of many, Daddy/Daughter dates.
-You want to go outside (wrapped in a blanket) at night and look at the moon. Mommy and Daddy always tell you that they "love you to the moon and back" so you enjoy looking at the moon.
-You say "it's all right" or "it's okay" when you spill something or when you think you might get in trouble.
-Books are your passion. You constantly read to Cho and to Barrett.
-You constantly are pulling the handle on the recliner so the feet kick up and the chair reclines back.
-You ride the arm of the recliner like it's your horse.
-You are starting to throw your leg up and over the side of your bed so we decided that it was time to promote you to a big girl bed.
-You slept in your big girl bed for the first time on January 19, 2013. You went to bed great and slept until your usual 6:30am.
-You will now come up and give hugs and kisses without being asked. It's so sweet!
-You had your first ear infection on January 21, 2014

A Year Later

Last year on January 22nd, we found out we were pregnant.
I remember running up to Rite Aid to get some pregnancy tests after a conversation with my mom left me nervous and scared. I remember seeing a positive test result after 15 seconds and then feeling a lump in my throat. I remember my heart beating out of my chest moments before I told Jason that we were pregnant. I remember us being scared and nervous for the journey ahead.

This year on January 22nd, we have the most precious 4 month old little boy.
The nerves and the fear have disappeared and we are flooded with joy, excitement and love for our sweet Bear. We have grown into a pretty amazing family of 4, with each day being full of new adventures.
In one year, a lot can happen. We've been so blessed and amazed at how the last 12 months have shaped us to be the people and the parents that we are today. I wonder what the next 12 months will look like?!

Monthly Photo Shoot: Month Three

My handsome little man was so much fun during the photo shoot this month. He's getting pretty good at holding his head up so we decided to do some tummy pictures. I can't wait until the weather warms up so we can get pictures outside...for now though, we'll keep doing indoor pictures.

There were a few other ones that were taken but they are of his cute little butt so I'll refrain from posting them online. Trust me though...they are adorable!

Monthly Updates: Month Four

Barrett,
How is it that you are already four months old? I feel like we were just bringing you home from the hospital and trying to get adjusted to having an extra family member. Now here I am, barely able to remember life four months ago. You are an amazing little boy, simply amazing.  Your smile is contagious and able to light up any room. You are one of the best gifts that God could have given us! I can't help but pull out my phone and show off pictures when someone asks about you....you are the cutest little guy! I'm so excited that we're on this journey with such a precious little boy.
We love you to the moon and back!
XO
Mommy

Here are some special highlights for your FOURTH month:

Weight: 16 pounds 5 ounces (89%)
Height: 24.5 inches (51%)
Clothing Size: You are wearing 3-6 month clothes and 6 month sleepers. Most brands run true to size but some are way off. You wore a 0-3 month onesie from Baby Gap this week and it fit you fine but you wear 6 month sleepers from Carters and they fit you fine too.
Diapers: Size 2 Target diapers are still fitting you great!
Feeding: You still LOVE to eat but you aren't so demanding now that you are a little bit older. We can occupy you for a little bit until your milk gets warm. We started supplementing with formula because I'm not making enough milk for you. You are eating a 7 ounce (5 oz. breast milk with 2 oz. formula) bottle when you wake up (usually around 4:30am) and then you eat 6 ounce (4 oz. breast milk with 2 oz. formula) bottles every 3-3.5 hours. You eat a 7 ounce (5 oz. breast milk with 2 oz. formula) bottle before bed (usually around 7pm) and you're good until the morning. You've also boycotted nursing. We try but we end up both getting frustrated so we don't force the issue. As long as you are getting breast milk, then that's all that matters.
Hair/Eyes: You still have the prettiest blue eyes and your hair seems to be getting lighter. Your hair is light brown but the new hair coming in looks really blond.
Sleep: You are going to sleep around 7:00p and you wake up around 4:30a for a bottle and then you sleep in until 7a. I know I shouldn't go in at 4:30a to get you but since you immediately go back down, I don't mind. I'm so happy that we did sleep training with you!!
Naps still aren't your favorite thing. You usually nap around 9:30-10:00 and then again around 1:00-1:30 and 4:00-4:30 but here lately you've been skipping the morning nap and taking an extra long afternoon nap.

Highlights:
--Went to church for the first time in December 22,2013
--You belly laugh when we tickle your neck
--Peek-a-boo is now entertaining and slightly funny
--You hold onto rattles, blocks and other fun toys
--Your hands are your favorite things...four fingers on your left hand are ALWAYS in your mouth
--Bath time is full of splashing and kicking
--You are starting to enjoy some time on the floor, especially when your big sister entertains you
--You are aware of your surroundings and you can find the TV anytime it's on
--You love music and you usually listen to classical music during nap time
--You will now roll up on your side when you are on your back
--Your favorite toy is a plastic hollowed out, grid like ball that you can easily hold on to and throw across the room.
--You rolled over from your back to your belly on Wednesday, January 8, 2014. Your arms weren't cooperating with you (they were stuck by your side instead of up by your head) and you got pretty frustrated.
--You enjoyed your first walk of 2014 on January 12th. Sitting up and looking around made the walk so much more enjoyable for you (and Mommy).
--You startle more easily, especially when Daddy and Amelia wrestle.
--Taking a picture in the same position each month is getting a little more difficult. You kept trying to straighten your legs to stand up...silly boy.

Mumbo Jumbo

  • Second birthday party planning is in full effect. The theme is going to be "The Very Hungry Caterpillar". Invitations have gone out and games/activities and a snack menu are on the to-do-list.
  • I've been going to Zumba class and I'm in love. I have no rhythm at all but the loud music, the booty shaking and the high intensity workout is just what I need throughout the week. I feel a little guilty that I enjoy it as much as I do!
  • My nephew, Spencer, sent me a fun activity with David. David is a character in a story, No, David and he was sent to our area to explore and to learn all about Hershey and Central PA so he could take it back and teach the class all he had learned. We had a lot of fun showing David around the area...we were sad to see him go!
  • We woke up on Wednesday morning to some really thick and dense fog and a sheet of black ice covering sidewalks, driveways and roads. Jason tried to warn us to not go outside but his warning was a little too late...my mom went out and fell down the driveway. Not cool!  Amelia was screaming for Nannie and Nannie was scraped up and stranded at the bottom of the driveway. She eventually made her way inside and we got her boo boo taken care of! Who knew that fog could freeze?!
  • Wednesday evenings, after work, are technology free nights at our house. We started with just one night and we're hoping to build up to three nights each week. It is really helping us to stop and enjoy family time without having the huge amount of distractions. It makes us realize how much we are on our phones/iPads each evening.
  • Today Jason interviewed for Chief Resident. He looked so handsome leaving for work this morning in his fancy clothes.
  • I'm so excited to have a 3 day weekend with these adorable little ones! I've been so busy at work this week that I'm so excited for some much needed downtime!

Daddy/Daughter Date

A couple of months ago there was an advertisement on TV for an Elmo production in Hershey. Elmo Makes Music was the theme and from the second that she saw the advertisement, Amelia was addicted. She doesn't really watch Sesame Street but she does have a few Sesame Street books so I'm guessing that is where she learned about Elmo. What's better than Elmo AND music?!
Amelia's just shy of being two years old so we thought she would really enjoy the stage, the lights and all the characters on stage. After a short conversation regarding the show, we purchased two tickets to see Elmo. The ticket prices were a little high, especially after the processing and handling fees, so we decided that one of us could take Amelia. Jason decided that he wanted to take Amelia. He wanted to have a daddy/daughter date!
We counted down the days leading up to the big day and when it finally arrived, Amelia could hardly contain her excitement.
I was so happy that they were going to the theatre together, so happy that he had time off to spend with her and so happy that she loves him so much but my baby girl went on her first big outing without her mama...and she had a great time!
Jason sent me tons of pictures so I could feel like I was part of their morning!  I LOVED seeing all the pictures...made me feel so much better.

Most of the pictures are blurry but even the blurriness can't hide my little girl's smile. She LOVED the show. She was so excited to get home and tell us all about the musical and show us all the pictures on her daddy's phone. Oscar the Grouch and Big Bird were her favorites. She kept reminding us that Oscar lives in trash...HA!
Elmo Makes Music was such a fun date for Jason and Amelia!  Our little girl is definitely a daddy's girl and I don't think her daddy minds at all!

First Walk of 2014

Yesterday the temperatures rose above 40 degrees so we were determined to get out and get some fresh air. We used to take daily walks, regardless of the temperature, but this winter has been a little rougher than previous winters so our walks stopped once the cold weather rolled in.
Since it has been awhile since we've walked around the block, we were all really excited to get out of the house. I know Amelia doesn't look too excited to go but trust me, she was!
To get a picture with her looking at the camera, I have to tell her that I have something (usually a bug) on my phone. Hence, the death stare to find out what's on my phone.
If I tell her to smile, this is what I get. The sweetest little smile, which can't be seen because her head tilts all the way back. Can't you just hear her saying, "Cheeessseeee"?!
The loop walk was so much fun! I forgot how good it feels to get out of the house, to get a little exercise and to get some fresh air. Spring can't come soon enough!
Amelia loves riding in the stroller with her brother. Throughout the whole walk she was making sure that his hat wasn't covering his eyes, that he could see some of the neat yard ornaments and that he was staying awake. If he started to rest his eyes, she would yell "eyes" to let us know that he was sleeping and then he would immediately startle and open his eyes.
Our family, dogs included, loves the outdoors. I'm so thankful that we had a nice day to get outside...we definitely needed it before the next cold front moves in on Wednesday.

Finally Friday!

*Thank goodness today is Friday. This week went by so slow but my days were so busy I didn't know if I was coming or going. Definitely going to use this weekend to love on my babies and to get prepared for future weeks. Preparation is key to decrease the amount of chaos!
*Amelia has become quite the little photographer. I just deleted 119 pictures of Barrett, Cho and her Daddy's foot but there was one picture that didn't make the cut. How adorable is this picture of Bear?
*Breakfast entertainment at our house. Barrett can barely see his sister over all of his toys that she brought him.
*Have I mentioned how addicted my child is to water? She begs to stand at the sink and wash dishes, play with Barrett's bottles and wash her hair. I have to fill up our soap dispenser every other day because sister thinks that more is better.

*Tomorrow morning Jason is taking Amelia on a date. They are going to see Elmo Makes Music and I'm not sure who is more excited. Can't wait to hear all about their time at the theatre!
*No Amelia means a Saturday morning full of grocery shopping and cleaning...wish me luck!

Late Night Snacking

Late night snacks have become Amelia's all-time favorite excuse for not going to bed. Yes, she probably is hungry because she picks at her plate during dinner time but she's also a master at working the system. Sister knows after bath time when the lights get dimmed that it's almost bed time so she starts asking for a bite. Amelia is her name and delaying the inevitable is her game!

We go into the kitchen and she skims the cupboards and the refrigerator until she finds the perfect late night snack. Most nights it's an orange or a slice or turkey but last night she needed a little more.
Last night she requested a bowl of Special K with red berries in an adult sized, glass bowl. She thinks she's too big for colorful plastic bowls now that she is almost two.
She would take a bite of cereal and then take a big drink of milk from the side of the bowl. She requested that I take a picture. Important milestones like these must be documented!

Spending an extra 20 minutes each evening enjoying an evening snack is going to be something that I miss when Amelia gets older and decides that she doesn't need to be loved on before bed.
We are enjoying these nightly late night snacking sessions with our girl!
